Overview Muscat City Facts
Muscat city, a thriving and strategically located port of the Arabian Peninsula in ancient times, is the capital of modern Oman and the hub of its political, economic and commercial affairs.
Its medieval appearance with two Old Portuguese forts - Jelali and Merani - flanking the rocky cove, around which the city is built, makes it a unique and unusually exotic place.
Muscat abounds in gardens and beaches. It is one of the cleanest cities in the world.
Muscat has an excellent road system and infrastructure.
A state-of-the-art deepwater port is the nerve centre for shipping. Muscat handles the bulk of the country’s foreign trade, especially the export of crude oil and the import of food.
In 1994 the government announced that women would be allowed to become members of parliament, making Oman the first Gulf state to propose awarding senior political posts to women
